It dont have to be sorted out:

Black or brown-eye hunters might be better suited to hunt in the bright sun while another kind of eye with lighter color and another design might be better at night. So both mutations can exist.

This even can lead to: night-eyes use all sensors to see contrast / light but no colors. Day-eyes dont need all receptors for light and use a few for differentiating colors.

Both can have advantages.
