How can textures such as png files be converted for use in levels?

Use an image editor like the Gimp, UltimatePaint, Paint.net etc to convert to bmp,pcx etc...(All free)

Its the wad format I am puzzles about. In Wed that seems to be the only one available. I am completely new to 3dgs so in a few days time I may know more aboit this.

klick with right mouse botton on it and then at Textur Manager...!
