hey chaps

i really need these questions answered before i purchase 3dgs so please reply to me.

i've had a scan through the forums and not really got the answers i need so i'll try here.

i'd like to create a third person game with melee weapons, now i'm no programmer so i need to know if it's possible for me to do this with the templates.

basically the main character will be running around picking up and dropping weapons. when the weapon is picked up it will vanish from the floor and when it's dropped it will reappear where it has been dropped. is this possible?

if it is do i have to have seperate animation sequences for the main character holding the meele weapon so that when he picks that weapon up it morphs from the standard empty hand model to the holding weapon model?

please reply and forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere.

well serves me right for being cheeky!

downloaded the demo about a month ago but having just returned to uni and having all other free time taken up with my young daughter i've had next to no time to have a look through the manual.

thought i'd take a chance that someone would reply and save me oodles off time but like i said serves me right.

just had a babysitter for a night so i've had my chance now and i can see that it can be done so sorry for all the people i've ticked off.

there is just one other thing though, i can't find a weapon drop function mentioned or have i just missed it?

again sorry chaps,

Well the problem is that the A7 templates haven't come out yet, as A7 is by now still in beta. So we don't know whether it will be possible to do the things you want, with the A7 templates. From my experiences you can create a basic melee game with the A6 templates, weapon dropping isn't included however.
But I don't recommend you trsting on the templates if you want to have more than just a start to game programming. There are other tutorials and first steps on the tutorial sectiopns to go with. You don't need to be skilled with programming, but if you want to stay in game development, you either have to look for a team, or you have to be willing to learn at least some basic stuff about scripting (which gets along with using tutorials or the templates at any case). Because no template can give you exactly what you have in mind.

EDIT: Ok little mistake of me, there is a beta of the A7 templates in the templates forum, haven't recognized it so far.

Hi, the best answer is yes from me as you can use George Pirvues AUM series to cover everything you mentioned in c_scipt, which at this stage is a lot more robust and supported forum wise than lite-c.
Later you can convert to lite-c or go hard with lite-c and ask for help with any conversion support.

The functions you want are not implemented by default, you will have to edit the templates or the starting script you begin with and AUM does cover some aspects of this process.

Welcome aboard.

excellent stuff, sounds like a plan.

As you've both mentioned some scripting knowledge is a neccesity for a career in game development and has been a shortcoming of my more art based course. Thanks to your, and other, more than adequate replies i can see i have come to the right place.

thanks for the welcome and i look forward to contributing my efforts in the very near future..
