Anachronox ! It's a hilarious RPG / adventure. Just ignore the first hour of tedious gameplay it gets great after that. Also make sure you install the patch before starting to play :

For pure adventure play you can't go wrong with either The Longest Journey or Gabriel Knight: Holy Blood

hm, i'd say Fahrenheit by quantic dreams for the strong storyline and innovative game play, but you examples tell me that you are more into rpg than adventures.

you played it too? Now you are one of my best friends!

one of the most compelling games ever. i played it 2 days "nonstop" (quit the pc only for loo, food and some sleep). think about the press-buttons-in-time-minigames what you like, but story and characters are so well-created that you don't mind. a musthave and a milestone in gaming history, no doubt.

Definitely a cool game, but the press-buttons-in-time did make it frustrating at times. I'm generally a quite patient person when it comes to finishing games, but at some point trying to make it the 50th time just didn't seem to make much sense anymore. I did eventually finish the game a few times because of the multiple endings, but sometimes with longer gaps between whenever I got stuck again. Some of those scenes are pretty difficult to pass,

Cheers

RPG: Fallout 1 and 2. It's old but if you're really after a strong plot and endless freedom, other games don't even come close. You get to eliminate an entire slavers group in order to free a guy named Vic, then travel to another town and sell him to slavers. Or instead, join that slavers group, ignore Vic or your main quest and start making a living by capturing tribals, junkies and hoes.

Adventure: Leisure Suit Larry 7

Unfortunately, both sequels of LSL7 and fallout 2 suck

Um.. what's that shiny AI thingie again that suddenly shows up near the end of the game? Fahrenheit is not bad but you can tell they ran out of time to finish it (as admitted by the developers) near the last third of the game.

that cyborg thing wasn't logical at all, that's true, but it fulfilled its task as an unexpected twist. the mayan story would have been enough for me, they wanted to add another layer, well, it didn't ruin the game for me.

Can anyone recommend a good adventure/RPG type game to me please? Preferably one that I can play on the PC. (I've only really been playing FPS games for a while)

Given that tomorrow, November 2nd, is actually the Día de los Muertos, the only real answer to this question can be Grim Fandango.

Yes, it's old, it's probably hard to find and you have to get used to the controls (same goes for Monkey Island 4, really, but don't you guys think the predecessors were better?), but the characters and the story, the great humor and the music make this such an awesome game. Some of the puzzles can be hard, but thats what adventures are about, right? Do yourself a favor and try it, it's really great fun.

Other than this, I'm simply going to say what I'm saying in like every thread, which is Phoenix Wright/Ace Attorney, Hotel Dusk, both DS. They are awesome, great stories. Recommended!

Perhaps this post will get me points for originality at least.

Check out Dungeon Deities! It's amazing and will make you happy, successful and almost certainly more attractive! It might be true!
