I only use .oggs and don't have a need for commercial movies (yet) but this has been an eye-opener. Thanks Nard!

what about quicktime MOV? do you know anything about that?

MOV is also a wrapper for various CODEC's. MOV's use CODEC's such as, Cinepack, MPG 2, MPG 4, Indeo, etc....

It's the CODEC owner that you need to get a license from, or verify you are free to use or distribute video created with their video compressor. If you have to distribute a CODEC's drivers, you will for sure need a grant of license...

Xdiv (edit: Xvid (probably a copy of divx but appear are legal)

for high definition codeclike h264 are the x264 but appear is not a legal codec

XviD is great and is free (GPL) except in The States and Japan.
Check wikipedia.
