oh, ok - thanks, that should make it easier to engineer I hope. The guys on the shader forum and Joozey's above spost seem to have it pegged to a refraction type thing for the surface effects so I think I have a good head start now thanks to all of yous @ Chaotic Dragon, thanks mate but the guys here are just as good, appreciate the willingness to go far on this one. Thanks heaps ...

It's definitely a refraction shader. The only question is how you'll apply it.
Best option would be to use three frames.
- Render the level without the character. - Render again with the character, and the character uses the first frame for refraction. Not the best method, but it'll work
Hopefully someone else will have a better idea
