I guess the wild wild west landscape that used to be has simply changed a lot over the recent years.

I totally agree, eventhough it's an often very difficult process. Most people give up around half-way or do not even nearly get started.

I think in general that people a. underestimate the tremendous amount of work involved in making games ( I for one sure did ) and b. some people seem to be in it for the "money" only, where most developers do not drive around in Ferraris in real life.

I can't quite back point b. with solid arguments or figures as far as motive for even wanting to make games, so feel free to forget it, but I do often hear people complain as if they haven't accomplished anything after having shipped their first title, having worked on a project for so long and now get mediocre to 'okey' sales from it...
