You can download for free a program called "Flux Studio" that can open a vrml file or collada or sketchup kmz or 3xd files and convert it do more common 3ds obj etc. Also the free version of Vizup can reduce any polygons and it's a great poly reduction tool. Here's the link for Flux Studio:
