what would you do if all search engines went down for a week....

and even worse:

what if the whole internet including closed LAN's and wireless networks all died for a week....

Now that would be a very productive week, that's for sure!

There's a lot of knowledge on the internet to be found, but the amount of crap and things that succeed in totally distracting one from the jobs at hand is near infinite.

I already have had obligatory-1 week-no-internet-access-weeks in the past just to really get things done that needed to be done. Works a charm actually,

Well it'll be no google mail for me so no contacts I suppose, probably be interesting to see what would happen if a sunflare hit us (internetwise that is).

You are thinking too narrow...

Well let's explain a bit...

There are lots of sites (LOTS!) who exist by the very income they get by Google Ad's, for some big sites this could mean the end and even for the small ones.

There also are lots of travel sites who use google maps for showing where a travel leads to and so on. Not being able to offer this feature would actually decrease sales.

Many, many websites and companys are also only runing because of their high google rank. They depend on people that search on google for a specific term and get to their website, whereas other search engines might not even list them. Google being down for a week could mean a big decrease in income or even the end.

[edit]Inspired by 4eyes post: There are even companies who get jobs from mails, and some use google mail, I can see that very often here. They would earn less aswell.[/edit]

I could list hundreds of more things. But if you think wider than your "ill just use another search engine", then you can actually see, how dependant our todays world is on google. (Even I would lose my job, we ARE dependant on google, just as many others are)

Think about it

this doesnot change anything. it would be even better than before because those lousy sites wont exist anymore.
who makes his income (or even his existance) depend on google, well "thou shall burn in hell"

Google ads is cheating. For several times they didn't pay me for clicks. Once I've recieved the next cheque I'll consider switching to some other network.

For showing your commercials they charge you in euro, but payout for clicks is in Dollars. Rip-off.

Hehe, that's how you run a sucessful business.
A little bit off topic now, but just a little bit... Did you guys read about that new search engine wikia (obviously it has been created by the wikimedia group)?
I read something about it in a german newspaper just the other day and they were kinda like saying that it has the potential to become really good one day. Maybe that's our google killer right there...
(It is supposed to work with user ratings and stuff, so that there are only websites shown that are REALLY good and REALLY are about the topic that you are looking for. Now I cant't see that happening, since a lot of people won't take that serious enough, but it seems like a very interesting idea, doesn't it?)

I get charged in dollars for showing my ads, perhaps you can change that somewhere... or perhaps it's simply because my website is on an American server?

Cheers

So... what do you think would happen if google would stop their services for one week?

Actually an intresting question, because nowadays so many things rely on google.

uuhhhh ... Could be a big chaos all over the world, maybe another big stock exchange crash, maybe another economy crash... I don't know how much power and influence google really have and I think, I don't really wanna know it.
In any case, if this would happen, we all will know how much ...

For my personal life this would be not so hard, because I would use other search engines. To loose the whole www would be incredible f***ing hard ...

I think things like this will only become a real problem when it lasts a lot longer than just one week, because even in a worst case scenario one week less will only mean 25% less income for that one month. I doubt people wouldn't be able to handle a one-time month of only 75% income,

Cheers
