Excellent stuff! Did you make this Ventilator? Seeing as it's made with the Newton Game Dynamics engine..

Cheers

no, i have no clue about how to do something like that. i came across this video on the newton and ogre forums.

this demo is done with the current newton version.

future newton versions will include physics based animation features which will do similar stuff (characters automatically readjusting their walk cycle when going up slopes or stairs, rebalancing themselves when pushed,...) but those features won't include the spider behaviour the author of this demo implemented.

Quote:

There's no central mechanism that does the animation, its an emergent property of many control and regulatory modules all competing to satisfy goals.

it's really interesting that this thing moves very similar to a real spider then but probably real spiders also kind of work this way.

Yea, this is very cool.
As ventilator says, it's magnificent that the spider walks on itself exactly like a normal spider!

Nature might not be as complex as we thought. It's rather an inevitable result from the laws of physics. Most interesting indeed ^^.

i'm really pleased to see this, because i've been playing with the idea of procedural physics-controlled animation, and i've had my eye on Newton but haven't used it yet. good to see it handles it so well.

This reminded me of an engine... It had something to do with Star wars ^^

There, they showed AI'd ragdolls, that procedurally grab a ledge and try to get most satisfying balance. This was showcased by putting mr. Jones to an hanging bridge, which then was mercilessy waved, trying to drop Indiana.

i think they used euphoria in that star wars thing. apparently gta4 uses it too. so getting that! your character gets drunk and the AI lets him try stay stable but do a not-so-good job, and he's stumbling all over the place, and you have to guide him.

pretty cool i reckon.
