I played around with about 300 trees generated out of a trunk, a branch and leaves. -> I had about 12000 models in my scene with all together about 200k faces... It run with about 25fps on my system
200000/300 = 666,66666... faces per tree splited into about 40 models per tree.
But the main point is: 1440 < 200000 I had 200000 faces running with about 25fps, now calculate how fast it will run for you with 1440 faces
