I think we are happy that JustAnOldMan joins our community and I really like to read that he enjoys the Lite-C tutorials.
But at the other hand I think you both exaggerate a bit in terms of GG and sinking ships. This here does not read like a sinking ship: http://www.garagegames.com/blogs/985/14177 They are not only improving engines and tools, melting 3 engines into one, they also make a full multiplayer action game.
I dont want to defend them though. Just want to calm a bit down and say that business is still alive at Conitec and competition.
Father_Frank: Just wanted to mention that I didn't really say anything about a sinking ship. GarageGames is definitely doing business. Torque 2 (whatever shape that takes) is being touted as a great product. Torque X is something a lot of people have been looking at. The aquisition by Instant Action was a major step. And they have some pretty big government and educational contracts going. They've added numerous employees in the last two years. All in all they seem to be making (or aquiring) money. My big yank with them is that they've never been quite as "Indie", or customer oriented as they claim, and it's gotten much worse over the past year. Their attitude towards people who praise them in every way and give them money is great, but people who are actually brazen enough to ask for what they paid for get absolutely hammered. No, I don't think they're sinking at this point, but I really believe some of the business decisions they're making now are going to adversely affect them down the road.
That aside, thanks for the welcome to the community. From what I can see so far I like it here. As I said, I'm going to do a little more playing with the demos and examples before I plop down another grand on a totally new development environment, but I just can't seem to find anything at this point more in line with what I'm looking for than 3DGS seems to be...

Firoball: I never really took a look at C-Script, so I have nothing to go by, but Lite-C does look really good. I'm sure when I pick up the software I'll have a few questions here and there, but right now I'm just playing.
I have a few 3D things I want to work with, but right now I'm really interested in 3DGS's 2D capabilities. I have a couple casual game things I'd started in TGB Pro, but will now have to look at doing in 3DGS.
Also for 3D I have to look at MED and what I can/can't do with it. I understand it's fairly limited. I own GameSpace and TrueSpace, but I actually like MilkShape and Blender pretty well. The key, just like Torque, will be finding the best asset pipeline to use with 3DGS...

I think MED can use Milkshape plugins, but better ask someone who knows how to model. I suck at it Since Gamespace once sponsored a 3dgs contest I'm pretty sure it natively supports the 3dgs MDL format. 2D capabilities: I'm not sure if 3dgs is the right engine for 2d stuff, I'mnot really into 2d anymore. It's not impossible (there was a 2d game handed in for the witner contest) but there might be other software which is better suited for 2d (e.g. Multimedia Fusion).

Didn't know that, Firoball. Thought with GS I'd be killing two birds with one stone. Most of what I'd seen about 3DGS says 3D and 2D, so I just made the mistake of assuming. But, that's why I'm taking a good close look at it...

Although I keep hearing how their burn rate is higher than they can keep up, I meant nothing by it. I have no idea how GG is doing business wise but it just strikes me as odd that Jay, who was the most visible figurehead for GG, would leave if things were going well. Quote:

Sounds like an all too common scenerio in todays game industry:
1) Person makes game engine... 2) ...Uses the Indie community to support it, test it, use it, get publicity for it... 3) ...as soon as Big Money becomes a possibility, Indie community is left behind.

One thing to note is that I remember reading that if you still must have the A7 logo in Pro if your advertizing your game at some kind of event, you might need to look into it since it might have changed, but I know I've read it. I love A7, I've been with it since A5 and I never regreat picking this over Torque and Dark Basic and whatever else. It can be simple and it can also be complicated, but it's only as complicated as you want to make it.
