I am working on a 2d game that uses a lot of panels so I have been keeping an eye on bmp video memory consumption with the F11 panel.

I have a few quick questions about this:

1) Right now it is around 27,000. Is this equivalent to about 27 megs of ram usage?
2) My entire image folder is under 6 megs. I converted all images from .jpg to .png to decrease consumption, but it had no effect. Do I need to use a different format?
3) What should I consider a rough limit on bmp memory consumption if I want my game to run fine on older systems?

Thanks much for any help.

1) yes
2) yes, you may consider dds files where it´s possible
3) good question. I would go for 32MB to 64MB.

Maybe you should mess around with bmap_purge.

no science involved

Excellent advice, bmap_purge should be very useful. Thanks for the help, Fogman.
