ok tested :

256 * 256
.pgn
.tga
.bmp
.dds
.pcx
with and without alpha.

All gave error bad file format on debug.

Only file that seemed to work was palette.pcx which is a 1 kb bleu value only picture.

Am i overlooking something here or what?
