Cadiz, Spain, Realtime Plaza and Sunset....

Hello all,

Happy new year.

Here are some still screenshots I wanted to show of a realtime level I made in 3D Gamestudio. I want to show my clients and potential new clients how realtime 3d can be used for visualisation.

There are some tweaks I need to make on it tommorow, such as the corners in the skycube, driving me crazy!

All models were made in 3ds max with some 'dirtying' of the textures in zbrush.

The scene was made from sketch and references from photos from a trip to Cadiz, textures were made up of photos and 2d editing. I wanted to make the colours and lighting an evening light and spent a while in max trying to get it right.
I baked the textures in 3ds max using mental ray but the models are also slightly lit in gamestudio as well.

Very slight normals were added and Christopher-Blaesius helped to make it all workeable in gamestudio along with nice normal, specular bloom and sea shader and general interactivity programming.

I will eventually put the exe on here as a download but at the moment I want to hold it offline to market to clients.

Yes I agree, overuse of shaders or unecessary shaders I dont beleive are always needed.

Mind you Ive seen arguments starting from such opinions on this site so we had better be careful!

Im going to record a flyaround of this in fraps and will put on youtube over next week so will post here when I do.

never been there, but it reminds me of that level in painkiller. i loved that one. especially because of that cool style. logical conclusion: i love this little piece of art as well lol
although it could use some fine tuning. keep it up, add some details and use sharper textures, that would make it perfect.

Yeah, but... Who is Lu?

I finished this before xmas eve and Im sure you know how it is, it blitzes your mind at the end and you dont want to go into the textures to reedit.

However, now looking at the textures, most are 1024, the DDS conversion is what has made them so blurry, I know its Lossy but cant help thinking if there is a good programme that converts them without much loss of quality, the one Im using seems to lose a lot of quality.

I could always use just the old BMPS on key models, then that will certainly improve some of the blurry textures. Any input would be good thanks!
Still stuck on making the skycube look ok I could use a skydome, is there a tutorial for this? I suppose I use polar coordinates to implement the sky texture?

Thanks again.

Ive never tried this and dont know if its possible but what about a LOD control method for textures where you have invisible or faded sprites layered over the window that triggers fustrum lodding of textures per block?
Every time the sprite goes over the building, good textures are loaded and reversed when moving on or something similar.

That way you can have good bmaps then swap back to fuzzy ones like Serious Sam seem to use.

Can block textures be changed at runtime these days?

Sounds interesting,
I am using DDS Converter 2.1, also I have tried converting to DDS in 3DS Max view panel, they both look compressed a lot.

Whereas if I save as a jpeg, it is a lot less compressed.
Does anyone know if there is a way to convert to DDS without too much compression? If I change the textures to their original BMPS they would look much better but of course it would drop frame rate to unuseable.

I love it. I don't think it's too blurry, partly, but most of it is ok.
And, if I may say so, also partly photo-realistic.

I don't have a homepage, for god's sake!

I like it boy. Especially the sunset on the sea and the shadows on the buildings.
If I take a look on the pictures, I must say there is really a spanish athmosphere =)

Just use TGA images , you get the best quality. All games are released on DVDs now adays , why worry about texture size ? Btw , i've never seen any slow down using TGA images for textures , they've always seemed to work fine for me , so give them a try.
