Cadiz, Spain, Realtime Plaza and Sunset....
Hello all,
Happy new year.
Here are some still screenshots I wanted to show of a realtime level I made in 3D Gamestudio. I want to show my clients and potential new clients how realtime 3d can be used for visualisation.
There are some tweaks I need to make on it tommorow, such as the corners in the skycube, driving me crazy!
All models were made in 3ds max with some 'dirtying' of the textures in zbrush.
The scene was made from sketch and references from photos from a trip to Cadiz, textures were made up of photos and 2d editing. I wanted to make the colours and lighting an evening light and spent a while in max trying to get it right. I baked the textures in 3ds max using mental ray but the models are also slightly lit in gamestudio as well.
Very slight normals were added and Christopher-Blaesius helped to make it all workeable in gamestudio along with nice normal, specular bloom and sea shader and general interactivity programming.
I will eventually put the exe on here as a download but at the moment I want to hold it offline to market to clients.

Hi thanks for the constructive feedback!,
The textures are mostly 1024, if anyone has tried 3ds max texture baking system with mental ray is really buggy. Above that it tended to crash. I dont have enough time to amend this as Ive got to pay the bills but may redo it another time. It could actually be the dds converter I used which was some free one on the web, I think the conversion broke down the quality, I will look into another one and see if I get the same lossy compression.
As for the skycube, I will try to amend that this week and repost. I really cannot find a good tutorial to make the corners look as if its a skysphere. I wanted just the blue sky I grabbed from the max sky system as Cadiz, often has completely blue skies!
There are some shaders in the level, I could crank up but I like to keep the bloom etc very minimal as I dont like it being too much.
James.

Looks wonderful! A friend of mine was born there, and we visited his parents there several years ago! Can't believe to see it now in game! How big is the area? How many streets and buildings? And, how many time did it take to build it?

Hi,
It took quite a while, I wanted to make the window panes etc be inset etc, so this added to the time. I started it over a year ago but I have done a lot of commercial work inbetween so I cannot really give an accurate timescale.
Its only the 'plaza Cathedral' with the oversized Cathedral and you can walk out to the road next to the sea to an extent. I put quite a lot of buildings in background. If you visited it I am sure you will know this part.
I love Cadiz too, I would quite like to live down there someday, its quite good for surfing down there which I like to do too. I might try to send this to the tourist board down there, my Spanish isnt fluent enought yet though so need to ask a fluent Spanish letter writer!
There is a 'virtual Cadiz' by the tourist board but its old now and vrml looking.
The project initially was meant to be a futuristic serial/machinima or adventure game with first scene in Cadiz but lack of funding and also too much commercial work, I decided just to make the Cadiz of today part of it, for now anyway!
James.

it really does already look good without shaders get some high res textures, and it might just be perfect

Thanks again for all positive comments/criticism. i really appreciatte the comments on the atmosphere as I wanted to convey the dusky dry feeling of Cadiz at sunset. If you have never been, I would really recomend watching the sunset there.
Im Max most textures are 2048, perhaps oneday might do a version of this with realtime lighting.
I saved these screenshot images here as jpegs so there was a slight loss to textures, so they arent that bad, lol.
If you see the back of the Cathedral, I used UVW unwrap on that mesh, and I needed to make the facade take the biggest part of the area. Yes I know I could split it up lol. Also, there is slight specular bloom in the images, you may notice. I dont like 'blooming up' too much as it is a bit sickly I feel. There are normal maps on the meshes but with fixed lighting, what else to put on? I tried parallax but it didnt turn out well.
Baking textures in Max using mentalray is annoying, hopefully more support in future.
I had to get this done, I need to concentrate on commercial projects!
Im going to do some more realtime projects, but they will be more sculptural abstract type work, which is good as means less lighting problems and I can have a bigger texture for the minimal shapes.
Ill post some of these when I do that.

hmm...
Wheres the problem? I meant it really would look good without shaders, because of the high level of detail and the very nicely produced buildings. And I was referring to the statement of adding MORE shaders, which is really unnecessary.
