The whole 'european women' thing isn't a myth, but the question is wrong.
I've been with my Russian girlfriend 1 1/2 years, and also i am friends with some Romanian girls.
What I have learned through a lot of multicultural experiences and leraning is that 'europe' is too general of a location. Each country has their own cultures.
Granted, nowadays it seems everyone shaves everywhere, indeed likely due to advertising etc... But there was a time when it was more common for women not to shave their armpits.
Don't ask me which country was most famous for this because this was long ago and i can't remember. Either France or Italy I think.
The point is, it wasn't a myth, and is still common practice, though not like it was decades ago.
I still say my girlfriend is European, but Russia is not Europe, though I still think of all women over the big lake as European :P
Just remember, every country has their own cultures, so you can never group everyone as simply 'European'... Spain and Germany are over there, but obviously they are VERY different culturally.
Enough of the lecture, yes women from some European countries commonly did not shave their armpits, which ones i don't remember.
