Can GameStudio import Gmax Files? Gmax is the free version of 3DSM, but it cannot save as that file type. It saves in .gmax format. I'm not sure how, or if it's possible to convert a .gmax file into some other format so that GameStudio can recognize it. I'd appreciate anyone's insight in this matter.

So far as I know, no it can't. Autodesk made gmax so that people who just wanted to make Half Life mods, etc. could have a decent and free tool to use, to keep people from abusing the technology and using it for commercial purposes they made the gmax format. Might be wrong, probably am.

It can be imported into 3ds max and other modellers using a couple of plugins/converters.

Have a look here for more info...

Heh, thanks for the link DJBMASTER, but I came from Turbosquid originally because they told me to ask the question here, heh. I knew that it could be imported into 3ds max, but wouldn't I have to have max in order to import it into that file?

I was wondering if I could import it without having to buy a different software to import into first, and then put it into gamestudio. I can't afford to spend $2.000 on 3D studio max...If I could import it into a free software program first, and then into gamestudio that would be great, and was really what I was asking in the first place. But, I don't know if there is anyway to do that?

don't waste too much time to find a "hidden way" to get gmax files into 3dgs - there must be a reason why this is not described in the wiki, in the manual, in the forum or anywhere else. because there is none that would justify the effort. the only "possible" way is through the tempest game pack, to my knowledge.

if you have max to open gmax files, fine, why not use max from the very beginning?

Well you can get Gmax from Turbosquid, thats where I got it. Autodesk no longer offers it, Turbosquid does, but you're right, there must be a reason why this is not described in the wiki. As far as converting models goes; google it, if you can't find anything on it in the first page, give up laugh

Damn, I'll give it a shot. Thanks guys. I'm using gmax because I cannot afford 3D Studio Max; but I really like the way you can create in gmax. I haven't ordered gamestudio yet, but I am going to get the commerical edition this Friday. I'm not sure if the layout will be similar to gmax, or harder to use.

My biggest concern is that gamestudio will not have a key that allows you to type in the measurements of a wall, and use a scale--say, inches to keep everything scaled in the scene. I could do this using gmax. I downloaded the demo of gamestudio, and I couldn't find an option to resize a wall (box) by typing in heighth, depth, and width manually. Could somebody confirm this?

yes for med, no for wed.(confirmation)

you can suggest adding this feature in the future section of the forum.

I am using milkshape for modelling/animating/texturing. It is cheap and yet powerfull, supports lots of formats.(im using fbx export/import and it works like a charm.)

I use med for fixing/importing and animating sometimes. And i find it is easier to do it with med when you are modelling less-complicated models.
