hes not saying to make it lower poly necessarily, hes saying your not getting a good detail-poly ratio. your current template could have soooo much more detail for the amount of polys your using but it doesnt, and it could be sooo much lower poly and have about the same look. thats why he's talking about it, everyone knows that now adays especially for a commonly looked at (main char, boss) 3000 is quite low poly. hell, if you only have 3 characters on screen at once, i dont see a problem using 10,000 polygons on each, as long as there is an efficient use for most of the polygons. each one should in some way contribute to the shape of the character.
