Blender (v.2.46) Trouble: Animating with Armatures #223271

Hi Everyone,

While trying to learn how to animate in blender for the first time, I've been unable to actually cause the vertices of my model to move when I move the bones. I've added all the necessary bones, and added the modifier to the mesh, but the mesh is still unaffected by the movement of the bones. More than likely I've missed an important step, however I've followed the tutorials closely.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

begebies

sounds like you have missed the skinning step. you could look into the tutorial link of my signature or go to the blenderartists forum and ask for help there.

It seems to be working now, thanks. smile I think the problem was that I forgot to make the mesh a parent of the armature, however I thought that I didn't need to do that in the newer versions. With that fixed anyways, now its just a matter of getting the deformation to look normal, and creating the actual animations.

Thanks again,

begebies

P.S.: I like your tutorials, they are well laid-out. grin

Hi Everybody again,

After getting the skinning down I've run into some trouble: some of my bones change the scale of the mesh when I simply want them to rotate. What's strange is that only the arm bones (of my humanoid) do this, while the leg bones can be posed exactly as I want without problems. This results in the arm being stretched thin and extended down to the feet of the character! All the bones have the same settings, but I still can't figure it out. Do you guys have any suggestions as to why this might be happening?

Any help would be appreciated. smile
Thanks,

begebies

EDIT: FYI I posted on the Blender artists forum a while ago, but have yet to get a reply.

it's hard to say where the problem is. you could upload your model.

I might upload the model, but here's a picture for the time being. As you can see the arm is stretched, even though I only applied an x-axis rotation.

If you send me the model i can help you smile

I think it's a weight painting problem !
some vertexs of the arm are also attached yo another bone elsewhere it can happen when you paint weights : sometimes you can by non attention paint over another bone.
But not sure , that's really strange.

(You can also delete the bone arms and recreate them
to see if thinsg go better ?)
If you can put your model on some host on the net , i'll download it and look at the problem.

i don't think it has anything to do with weight painting since the bones are scaled too. try to reset the mesh and armature transformations with ctrl-a.

Hey that worked! smile I figured there was something wrong with the transformations already on the arm bones, but I was unaware that they could be reset. Thanks a million! smile
