vista ram consumption is dependend on how much ram you have got. if you have got plenty of ram, it gets used as some kind of cache i think. I have 4GB RAM, so the 1GB is not such a big problem for me. ok, you say that vista is slow, did you try sp1? Yes, I have SP1. Vista is not that slow, but XP seems to be faster.

I have read a few reviews in the net and most of them could show that XP is indeed faster than Vista and faster than preview versions of Win 7. Also most games run faster on XP than on Vista. Often they even run faster on DX 9 than on DX 10.
But nevertheless I installed Vista this time to use a 64-bit installation of my modeling and rendering application (Lightwave 3d). So this software is able to address more memory for rendering. This can be useful especially when I use displacement mapping as a render option. And I can run XP parallel with enough memory. So no hard disc swapping is needed at any time.
But a casual user really does not need such an operating system.

Yes, I have SP1. Vista is not that slow, but XP seems to be faster. When i was installed XP, It was slower than Vista now. Maybe Vista is kinda slow, but Vista SP1 is a lightning! I have read a few reviews in the net and most of them could show that XP is indeed faster than Vista and faster than preview versions of Win 7. Also most games run faster on XP than on Vista. Often they even run faster on DX 9 than on DX 10. Actually, You're wrong, DirectX 10 is faster than DirectX 9. And the slow problem isn't in DirectX, The problem is in your Video Card.

Maybe Vista is kinda slow, but Vista SP1 is a lightning! This might be a pure subjective feeling. There are real tests and benchmarks out there. I would rather believe them or do my own tests with both systems. My new PC including Vista is also fast compared with my old PC / XP. But there is new hardware involved.

Ok, so if the people knows that Vista isn't slow, Why they hate it? it's awesome! First, I dont hate it. I use it daily and I am happy that it supports 64-bit and more RAM than XP. XP 64-bit has weak driver support. Secondly I meant that my new very fast PC still would run XP faster than Vista in some cases. But I take this into account because now I can address more memory. It is a trade-off. Still I am not a fanboy. I would not fall in love with Vista nor with XP. It is just a tool to do my work.

...but i still like it very much, because it's better than XP. You make a lot of generalizations. You said it is lightning fast. This is not true compared to XP. You said it is better than XP. And this is only partly true. Yes, Vista has some improvements but it also is bloated and because of this sometimes slower than XP. And there are compatibility issues. Most companies still use XP because of this. I also run XP in a virtual environment because of this. I would rather use only one OS. So it is definitely not better than XP in all terms, but some interface and security improvements are better.
