The bottom line is that you cannot make a next gen game with any of the indie game engines. That means gamestudio, torque, wintermute,... whatever. To make a next gen game on any of the platforms you need a next gen engine, those usually start at $30 grand.
I think the next gen engine is not the issue. Your indie game normally will not look better with a $30K engine than with, say, Darkbasic (ugh). Commercial games are made by between 20 and 100 top programmers and artists and have a budget with 6 or 7 figures. The engine does not matter much, they normally buy for 100,000s the best one thats available, because the engine price is negligible compared to the team salaries.
