Did you also check that S.M.A.R.T. messages get displayed in your BIOS? I've the feeling this is deactivated as default on quite some boards - it really worked out for me in December where my rather new hard drive decided to die slowly and thanks to S.M.A.R.T. I actually got a warning...
But if I remember right that detection was disabled for my two last Mainboards per default...

i guess S.M.A.R.T is only available on certain board manifacturers.

it s vista64 bit.
i cant reinstall since it doesnt find the HD. the computer is at a local specialist now. i hope it is only the bootsector For some reason I read 'local hospital' the first time around, I must be tired. :P Anyways, good luck, I hope you'll get your data back! Cheers

hello ello,
once again, did you read my post above ? As I stated yesterday SEAGATE drives dies through a with firmware bug.
Yesterday evening my Seagate Barracuda with 500GB (3 months old) dies too on this "BOOT OF DEATH"
The HD doesnt occuring in BIOS since that.
So I took a look in the Seagate-forums and saw a mass of people having the same problem.
Now I can only wait till Seagate release a statement what to do.
