You've definitely made a good point there. The media does often make violence and drama the focus of their news, but I still think violence has increased (slightly) , proportional to the size of society. It only makes sense, more people need to divide the pie. So, while crime rates in the bigger picture may be going down, acts of violence aren't disappearing just yet.

Don't get me wrong, I was shocked by that what in Belgium happened, but it is, because it is so close to my all day experiences, it is because I imagine it within the kindergarten of my son etc.

It's perhaps geographically closer, but there are kindergartens in Gaza just the same. wink I don't see why this makes it any different.

Do the numbers make it comparable? I think both are bad, and personal loss nor mass murder can be expressed in "units of horror". That's pretty pointless.

I don't meant to drag this to a whole discussion, I just find it strange to emphasize how some totally unrelated subject is the same horror as what happened in Belgium, but 400 times more.

I'm sure Frank meant to say exactly that, numbers do not matter. When I think of it, do numbers matter?? No, I totally don't think so. You know, it's dangerous thinking. It's like saying one of those earthquakes in Turkey a few years ago wasn't that bad, because they only had like 400 deaths or so, which compared to tsunami victims in Indonesia is a lot less, so it can't possibly be equally horrific. (Pictures showed both places even looked very much like a war zone.)

Really, numbers do not matter at all when lives are concerned.
It's slaughter either way.

Cheers
