I had a hard drive die on my once. I could not access it at all. However, I had a secondary drive with BeOS installed (yes, this was some time back) and I was able to access the drive and transfer all of my files to the secondary drive. Perhaps this could be done with Linux (if you have another hard drive laying around). Or perhaps you could do it with on of those Linux distros that boots right from a CD/DVD (Mandriva?) and then mount and burn the stuff you need.

Seagate itself offers a boot disk which flashes the drive, so no need of windows at this point.

hi,
Here are the news about my Seagate Barracuda HD.
Last week it dies because the "Boot Death firmware bug".

I couldn't access it in windows and it doesnt appearing in BIOS anymore. It seemed that no such a HD is build in the PC!

I installed the last firmwareupdate released last week and
... YEAH! my HD is online again ...
All data are still accessible.

I did not read yet in Seagate-forum if new problems after this update occuring again. So I dont know how stable it is.
But I'm happy to have the chance to backup my data on a western-digital drive;-) OR burn it to 107 DVD's.

Here are more info. instructions and firmware download

greetings,
gri

Samsung Spinpoint T are great.

Seagate HD normally are good as well, guess those last few aren't that good though.

Cheers
