The waiting part sucks... even though it's free. I'm not going to wait for an hour or more just to start playing.

I sure hope there will be no waiting issues when it launches, but I guess this is why they call it 'open beta'.

I think they want to determine the amount of players also.
Then they can scale up the servers to the expected number of players.
Its all a ressource question.

Given the long waiting cueue, it seems to be very popular.

even though they let 500-700 ppl per minute(they twitter page says that) queue still remains looong.

We apologize for the frustration a line causes, but it will be in place until we can scale and optimize our back-end to accommodate "everyone." This is our top priority right now and when we get to that point, there will be no queue. You can certainly trust us on this - for a game funded by advertising revenue, we don't want a queue keeping you out anymore than you want it.

Now, they got the attention, once they get the ads(and money obviously) there will be no queue.

Right now there are no ads (I could not see external adds yet), so they
dont earn money.

Its still the beta test.

Once they can generate money with it (5th of March I think)
they will scale it up to the required size,
as they get it payed.

They will earn money, but there won't be micro-transactions or fees of any kind. I'm thinking ingame ads or sponsor imagery might pop-up in due time. grin

Or perhaps they've earned enough with Doom3, Quake4 and their new engine to keep it running for a while? I'm hoping there won't be ads.

There are a lot of Advertisement-screens build into the levels (like big flatscreen TVs)
Maybe also when the player is in the setup screen / is dead.

But shure not during the gameplay itself.

Ad screens ingame sounds a lot like ads during gameplay to me though.

I heard they are going to ask minimal fees for private servers.. everything else is ad supported. I hope they won't fall for the big huge ingame ads stuff though, Quake 3 Arena should be without ads, even if you call it Quake Live instead. shocked laugh
