They will earn money, but there won't be micro-transactions or fees of any kind. I'm thinking ingame ads or sponsor imagery might pop-up in due time.

Or perhaps they've earned enough with Doom3, Quake4 and their new engine to keep it running for a while? I'm hoping there won't be ads.
