I am designing a simple but hopefully fun First Person game. So far I simply support the keyboard to move the player around.

Do you think I should add the joystick support also?

Thanks for your replies

Gerrit

Hi!

I just can speak for me and I'm not using a joystick for a first person game but for many action 2D shooting games.

There're some crazy guys that prefer a gamepad over a mouse but IMO I don't think it is really necessary. Leave that to the console gamers.

Add it! It'll be good experience to create optional controls, and you would open a larger audience.

Yes add it, epecially if your going to have vehicles, it is very annoying to use just a mouse and keyboard for vehicles, Quake 4 does that and yes they get away with it but most don't and I think if you really want a larger audience and more customers I would have it so that you can drive or fly your vehicles in the first person as well as the 3rd person

As game designer and player I use a gamepad with triggers in my left hand for movement; forward, backward, jump, crouch, strafing, and other functions such as; use, flashlight, reload. I control firing and site with the mouse with my right hand. This is due mostly to having had carpo tunnel and my current arthritus. I found a nifty little FREE program called Xpadder that allows a person to map keyboard functions to a gamepad.
www.xpadder.com (site seems to be down at the time of this post)
So yes by all means add support for a gamepad too many games don't no days.

If you want to be taken serious, add the support.
Leave it up to the user to choose the right control for him.

I always hate it, if games do not allow me to reconfigure the standard keys... so give this option to the user.
