You7ve pretty much stated most of the main reasons there. I am currently playing with adding sound to a game as well. It seems that .ogg files cannot be used with ent_playsound, so you'll still be stuck with your hefty .wavs here anyway. I've found that media_play causes a slight pause when executed.
Based on my experience so far, I'd say it would be easiest to use media_play with .ogg files for your background music and .wav with ent_playsound for your sound effects.
