Is there an easier way or a way to turn the spheres off, cause when I try to animate a model not only is it hard to see which way the bone is moving but before I can select the lower arm I have selected the hand about 18 times because the yellow/orange spheres are too big.

you can scale them down in options bone size

preferences->misc->bone size

even if 1 is too big, then your model is too small.
