Neon art style diorama
Hello, I'm fiddling with a new art style, and while I think I have something going on, I don't think I'm done. I could use advice, suggestions on new things to do/use/add and critique on what people don't like. I'm testing art styles using dioramas, ie: it looks like a game, but is not. All the RTS units just loop on a set patrol path (RTT total war-esk units to be exact). The airplane's movement is the one thing that is not semi-final. It will be better, with tilt and roll in it's movement. Everything else is final, except that I'm willing to change anything. I like the flowers, but in a not-too-sure sorta of way. Maybe if I added more, added some 3D-ness, made a jungle out of it? Suggestions on using contrast(-ing colours) would be cool too. The game would have small levels, so what you see is probably close to an entire level. Also, I would use other base colors, blue, yellow, green, etc for other levels, broken up into worlds to make sense. I was inspired from Darwinia (bits & pieces), Strange Attractors (main lvl), and green computer levels of World of Goo (lots of alpha fading, and I don't yet have enough). Direct download of .zip(It's a small .zip of a exe & resources. It does not install anything, and does not do anything annoying, like change the registry or add icons. Work safe.) Thanks! @Evil SOB. I've watched tron before. A cool movie.
I've been working on it, and I think it's better. Or horribly worse. Too close to it to see now.
I've updated the screenshots and the download link. I had a lot of plants, and machinery, so I played on that a bit.
If you're kind enough to give feedback a second time, or you want to repeat what someone else said, then please repeat any advice that has already been posted. It was chaotic down there in the gamedesign-pit, and somethings may have been missed, forgotten or damned to the flames of tarsus IV.
There is a lot going on, and I think in the game I might spread it out some more. But still, being crowded gives the player something to look at.
The cherry-blossom trees look good I think. Not sure about the clouds. The skybox is not pure grey, it is pixelled grey clouds, but last night was dark and this morning's sun has washed all the detail out of my screen. So that may be too faint.
I want to do something with UV skin movement and lights following the circuit patterns, but when I think about it, I'm not sure what.
Ya, so HUGE thanks to all the people who provided feedback. It was VERY helpful.

OK, I really cant knock your work, I cant knock something I have no concept on how to do. And its your idea, in your head, so I dont really know what you "intended" look is.
But, IF you are going for something close to the Tron look, then ... 1> Hurry up and get some other colors in there, even as separate screenshots. Just for the sake of comparison, as one color just overloads the eyeballs. 2> It may just bee the screenshots, but many things look kind of "blurry" rather than "radiant". In your screenshot with the plane, the middle two columns/buildings look great, but all the other buildings are dark, fuzzy and looking rather opaque. 3> Most objects still seem too solid, or non-transparent. Again, the two buildings mentioned in point two look perfect.
But, hey, you're the "artist" in this case, you know what you're looking for. This is just MY humble(usually) opinion on the great work you are doing.

Please 'knock' my ideas. That's what I'm posting here to let people do. So, two points, both of which have been mentioned before (meaning that they may be obvious to everyone but me). 1) Other colors. 2) Things are solid, not glowing. The glowing is the really technical problem I'm having. I'm not very good at shaders, and although I got the postprocessing stuff working, the bloom didn't work. I'm just not sure HOW to make stuff more glowing. I can make things transparent, but that's only going to confuse people more I think. The colors I will work on. I sort of like the monotone style, but I do think it needs more range. I'll tweak that out, and get some new colors in. EDIT: I'm going to switch from WED blocks to MED mdls for the edge blocks (the neonred lines). The main problem with this is that I can't adjust the size in the level editor. But I can more effects. Any suggestions on this? EDIT: Like the avatar. I play the orks. (We da biggest, and the best! Warrgg!). Ha! This map must run with higher fps due to my choice in colour. Because of course, DA RED ONES GO FASTER!... I kill myself, no really, whew.

You've done well adding different but coherently fitting colors and shapes to the whole thing.
It reminds me a bit of Darwinia (which is a good example actually!) and although it still needs some more colors, you've got the style going great now. Perhaps yellow explosions, laser FX and what not it looks perfect, but I'd like to see you experiment with some additional colors to the main red scheme there. Again, don't make a rainbow out of it just for the sake of having all colors in the spectrum. :p
edit: I don't like the color of the brown/yellowish grass. It might work with a warmer more yellow color or a more neon-like lighter green. Looking at the neon0 screenshot, the style works as is though. You could easily add purple or blue or explosion-yellow as well.
I'm curious as to what kind of game this ultimately will become, good work so far.

Thanks for the feedback. It boils down to it being a little too red, but again, I'm not really sure how to fix that, in a purely literal sense. The red is also a little too solid. People I show this to seem to like the pink glowing stuff, etc, but are not crazy about the large amount of very solid red. Fair enough.
I've tried changing it obviously, I've switched out the red with glowing pink tube collections, or spacing out the red with orange thin lines, and some yellow runners. It breaks up the color, but looks like crap. Not a great trade.
Well, I'll keep working on it for a bit, then post here again.
