I want to start a project with my other 2 team-mates, 1 of which is a writer, the other a modeller (i'm the programmer/coder). The writer needs an idea to start writing on, and the modeller needs to know what the writer is writing about... So if anyone has an epic story idea, please share! here's a list of what we've already thought of and the reasons we don't want to use them: - Science accident, strangelet particle wipeout (cliche)
- overpollution (boring gameplay)
- nuclear wipeout (cliche)
- world war 3 (cliche)

To point out as an writer and reader, "epic" means seriously insane amounts of work and genious writing. Everything has to fit together nothing is tacky, nothing is boring, but everything is suspensive.
You have to be able to affect the player at all times.

seriously insane amounts of work I knew that. At least it's not just me (3 mates)... My teammate likes to call himself a genius Everything has to fit together nothing is tacky, nothing is boring, but everything is suspensive.
You have to be able to affect the player at all times. It's going to be really hard.. But this isn't the first project i'v worked on, so i can approximate development times better than i used to

Being able to approximate time does nothing if you don't have actual epicness in it. Being able to call yourself a genius (I do that alot, too, when I'm drunk) has nothing to do with your real skills.
A good hint to make a game is to test alot of stupid ideas. You think plumber jumping on turtles and saving princess from the another castle is stupid? Well I call that epic. I also call most Zelda's epic. Also I think HALO and Half-Life are epic.
Study these games, find what makes them "epic" and what makes others die next to them. Forget about the iconic Nintendo or the multimillion budgets. Find it in the storytelling, game settings and graphical style and general execution. Then make stories, just random scribbles and put them together. Don't be afraid to dump a idea. Remember that the original idea is NEVER the final result. NEVER.

Being able to call yourself a genius I don't. far from it. Study these games, find what makes them "epic" and what makes others die next to them I'll try.. But I'm not the writer so i guess it doesn't help.. He needs to get himself an account on these forums... This project is for later though(when i have tonnes more experience and get a new engine). The one i'm working on now is a game where you're a green radioactive blob and have to try and get around a large sequence of obstacles by bouncing around. The blob can separate, change colour etc.. btw, thanks for all your tips and suggestions !
