This project was intended not to run within the game engine so those shots were indeed taken from inside the modeling program

Yes, the textures aren't fully optimized and there are better ways to handle it. The main problem with texturing high poly models is the UV layout. Manual UV layout isn't really an option (although it's possible).
This project was fully related to high quality rendering (model based) thus both cars have +1500000 polies. In other words, we used alternative ways ^^

I get your point but the main thing for this project was the model itself. Nevertheless, color reference was used
