So I just spent an entire day confirming that exporting multiple models from WED to MED (or from WED to an external format) doesn't work very well.

What I'm trying to do is to select multiple models in WED, and then export them to MDL format and open them in MED as one single model. If I try to view the new model in MED, I keep getting ">64k faces" errors and the model fails to preview. If I export to any format whatsoever, all the texture data seems to get either lost or corrupted, and I can not get the model intact into Blender (just the actual vertices and faces--not the texture info).

To explain why I'm doing this: I have a large level with many models in it that I am trying to port over to Blender (for the purposes of a large scene render). I spent a lot of time positioning all my models in WED already--I really DON'T want to have to import and re-position them all again in Blender, so I'm trying to "export" them out as a single model that I can then import into Blender.

I suppose what I'm trying to do is unrealistic given WED/MED limitations? Anyone? After trying all the different file formats for export, and multiple conversion programs, and single and multiple models export attempts, the problem appears to be on the WED/MED side of things in terms of exporting; the rest of the pipeline is working fine for getting single models (or even just WED blocks) into Blender.

Help?

is that even possible? i dont think so. i know you can merge models in MED and create a group, then open them in WED.

My Famous Quotes: "Hip hop is like a virus, infecting everyone and everything around it. Every form of media has some way, shape or form, assimilated hip hop into it." It has also mutated into other strains like, trip hop, house, rap, gangster, and conscious forms. Once you are infected with it, its with you for life."

Hey Blink, thanks for the reply!

I'm in Greenwich. Whereabouts are you?

Too bad about the MED/WED failure to export. This is really killing me here. It's seriously going to take me forever to re-import and reposition all my models in Blender...

Well, it looks like my hopes of exporting my level(s) to Blender are effectively dashed. So I'm going to have to settle for lower-rez screenshots taken from inside 3DGS, and that makes me unhappy.

I don't suppose anyone knows of a plugin or 3rd-party tool that would let me take a high-quality/resolution "render" of a level from within 3DGS, like Blender does?

i am in New Haven, no too far from Greenwich. As far as your issue, i think it is far beyond the capabilities of WED, seen some pretty amazing work from within the confines of WED. Some normal mapping, shaders and some creative building, you can make magic happen.

Yeah, it definitely has some positives to it... But for me, I'm trying to make a high-quality "map" from my level, and the high-rez render would have saved me a lot of time and trouble. It looks like I'm going to have to take a series of shots and stitch them together instead. I don't suppose there's a plugin or script or anything that helps automate this task?

you could use d3d gear, its pretty good at screenies, and video. i use it all the time. its not that expensive, and its worth having something like that just in case you want to do cutscene levels.

I've got a script in my level file for taking screenshots and saving them to a folder. I was hoping for something that could automate camera position, maybe by dividing up the scene (top-down) into quadrants or something and moving automatically from one position to the next while taking screenshots. Otherwise I'm pretty much going to have to move the camera manually and hope I get the coordinates right... Or is there a method for setting up multiple cameras and "jumping" from one to the next in order to get my screenshots from predefined positions?
