An indicator would be better. The automatically updating would probably annoy me, especially when writing long posts.

Auto-updating usually doesn't quite work, especially when it comes to hot topics where many people post at about the same time. You'll be responding to something that may have been 10 posts back on a really popular forum. Not quite nice.

I don't really need a notification about whether or not other people have posted. I always see my post and usually check for errors afterwards, so that will just about always make sure I will notice it and if necessary edit my post.

i think it depends on forum use, because on this forum and some others i use i don't need to see if a reply has been made while i'm writing but on one like the php help forum i use i need to know because i might end up answering a question thats already been answered etc.

I've seen forums using the "indicate for new replies" option, when you press submit. It's nice to know x other people replied while you were writing.
