I think it is because the LOD management is a PRO-only capability.
I too have found it irritating that MED is LOD-tool-crippled for me. (only commercial version).
It would at least be nice if the MED LOD-Tools worked so you could at least LOD
the models properly, and write your own LOD-engine code.
Or at least keep crippled functions COMPLETELY hidden.
