Hm I get a proper search function by pressing Alt+F7 - but I'm using Total Commander, which also eliminates the desktop mess by having dual tree view. You can copy from one side to another.

A go to function exists... at least for desktop shortcuts

Btw: I have desktop icons completely turned off and sice I've done that I improved my workflow a lot. But it needs extra tools as Windows Explorer is a poor solution.
