Urgh, thought I tried this before my stupid second posting - but you're absolutly right!
Didn't know that important difference between making an assingment and an initialization. (is that c++ comform?)

Yes, in C declarations are differenced from statements (e.g. assignments). The same rules should also apply for C++.

Having statements outside functions in lite-C doesn't seem to cause any compiler warnings. However, these statements aren't evaluated either.
