Well just to start a new discussion :

Don't you thinks cartoon choice , non realistic , allow you lot more freedom on design of levels, models and also textures ?

Some examples :
Ratchet And CLanck on PS3 : have cartoon style, but it uses some models with good number of polygons, some good shaders, lot of effects !

I think carton style allow you to make new ennemies, why following: Big dragons, zombies each time laugh ?
Yeah i know zombies are cool caus you don't have to program a difficult AI laugh !

Even some games take some realistic design mixed with cartoon textures, effects , and keep some good bunch of details , even with cartoon textures:
-latest Prince of Persia
-the excellent Borderlands !

That's why i prefer cartton style ; i don't have to stick to real proportions, i have lot more freedom.
I can imagine and modelise anything, no limit : caus i don't have to respect a perfect real visual design and proportions ,textures etc ...
