I figured this out. For some reason I have to open MED and select File->Preferences->Video Out and then click the blank button next to the video out text box. At this point I had to uncheck Gxl2BasDx9B and check Gxl2BasDx9a for both the 2-d and 3-d GXL Object. After doing this and clicking OK the grid lines appeared and I could create objects just fine. For WED I had to click File->Preferences and then on the Options tab click View Options. After this I had to scroll down to bring the Video Out textbox into view and click the folder icon to the right of it. From there I was able to do the same thing I did in MED... switch the GXL Object dll for both the 2-d and 3-d views from Gxl2BasDx9B.dll to Gxl2BasDx9a.dll by unchecking the former and checking the latter. After this I clicked OK, Apply, OK and the grid lines appeared and I was able to add new objects just fine.
