The New Testament describes death of the body and death of the soul as two different things; that the people of this world can kill your body, but not your soul: only God has the power to do that. I'm sure this is more than just the memory of our "character". But quite frankly the concept of a "soul" in the Bible is something I take for granted, and can't recall more precise details without looking into it
