best choice is a AMD Phenom II X4 (quad-core) or a Intel Core i3/i5 dual/quad-core combined with a ATI HD5770 or the like. The new NVidia GTX480/470 are quite weak in DX9/DX10 applications. The most important thing for a fast pc is a fast HDD and the main memory for blender (4-6GB DDR3)
two linked grafic cards needless, use one powerful card instead.

a really good dual core is better than a quad, because GS doesn´t support multi-threading at all That's true for GS, but he stated he's doing some short movie rendering as well, for which he can definatly use the processing power. And yes, a very good single Graphics card will give better results then 2 linked one's. regards,
