dpi has nothing to do with the scaling of an ingame texture.

so if i were to use photoshop to make my textures would

Width-1024 pixles
Height-1024 pixles
and resolution 300 pixles per inch

be suitable for this project?

im asking because ive made flyers/leaflets in past and sent the desings of to print shop only to have them sent back because the dpi/ppi wasnt a high enough resolution.

sorry 4 the neewbe questions
your advice is much appriciated

cheers xonath

as i said, dpi has really absolutely nothing to do with ingame textures. dpi means "dots per inch" which translates to pixels drawn per inch (~2.5 cm). this is just a number stored in your file and does in no way affect the image data.

for ingame textures all that counts is the resolution, which is width and height. normal textures have a size of 128x128 to 1024x1024 pixels. higher resolution means (mostly) higher quality, but lower performance. it's a matter of experience which textures you choose for a specific job.

scaling the texture ingame would be a pendant to the dpi stuff, something like texels per quant. but this is mostly irrelevant, as most designers just scale their textures so that they look good.

I have a small video tutorial for this question at youtube. [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIb4LTtqy9Q[/video]

In this video I use the marine reference model, a floor and a wall with textures from dexsoft. The textures are 512x512 pixels large. If we define that the marine model is about 2m in height including boots and helmet, this would also define that 256 px equals 2m and 512 px is about 4m.

If you play unreal tournament you will notice that the doorways are always very large compared to the players size.
Why is this the case? Because this game needs room for action and if you want to avoid some hits, you have to dodge (jump and jump again in mid air).

I hope the visual quality of the video will improve during the youtube post processing. It is a highres video (1200x800) but currently only the lowres is avaiable.

It is my first video tutorial, so please relax and ignore the noisy background.
