The Official Guide seems to lean more towards thoughtful advice to someone considering making a game to sell than useful material about using the programs. For me it has mostly been a waste of money. I have ordered the other and haven't received it yet. I'm not hopeful frankly and suspect I will still be wishing for a good book on 3dgs. The tutorials and AUM are definitely useful, and MUCH more useful than The Offiial Guide, but I too would like a book. And I don't mind that it will be quickly outdated.
