nice models but your normal maps look a bit faulty. they cause weird shading on some areas. on the hatch it's visible best.

you must have done something wrong during baking them. maybe the normals of the low poly mesh were wrong or something like that.

Hi,

the nmaps are fine. Not perfect of course but fine. the viewer i take the pictures of though doesnt support light set ups. so this ones are made with one very very close and dimm light. the images are not rendered but taken out of editors (wysiwyg).

here is just the nmap in a decent model viewer tool (again realtime):


Rendering nice images takes time and i would rather provide models instead of nice pictures wink

The parking meter low poly with the applied nmap:



Here the shading is quite tricky because adding round objects to cornered one and smooth them, can be quite tricky for the nm (edges).

but hey, its still a learning process laugh

yes, looks better with that lighting but i still see problems. there are some strange diagonals in the shading. are you using max? i am not a max user and probably this takes some experimentation but i guess for normal map baking it's very important that the smoothing groups are set in the right way.


here you can see what i mean for example. something seems to be wrong there.

The lower one (the cut in the main plane) is made on purpose (the lower left arrow). the plane aint ment to be totaly flat. There is a slight bulge in the plane.
Also the base ring of the hatch (upper arrow) cuts the light. a simple method to add depth to cubical models using nm.

but if someone doesnt like it, they can just remove the edge by painting the neutral blue onto it and remove the ring mapping.

To be completely honest: no
it would be a lot of fuzz and there aint much to see.

there is one simple bulge in the main plate causing a none planar hatch door. this breaks the shading a little bit.
and the ring uses one champhered extra line at the edges with another set of smoothing groups. this way the very low end of the hatch as well as its edges will be a little darker then the rest.

thats all there is.
and as said, if you dont like this you can remove them very easy from nmap.
