When the mixer slider is 0, you can't hear sounds. They are played, but won't make it all the way to your speaker.

Am I right to assume that all those problems were unrelated to version 8.10? When the audio mixer behaves strangely, the next thing I'd do is updating the audio drivers. Maybe they are set up to the wrong hardware, or something like that.
