hi,

For an future project I'm very interested when the web player for A8 comes out.

I have to decide wich engine I could use for the project but an browserplugin is a must have.

So could anyone give me a little timeframe for a possible releasedate?

regards,
Maik

Browserplugins are really useless and crappy - I would never ever download something like that as a customer. First, I have to download the game itself, no matter what - then I could just download the binaries - and second, I would have to install another plugin into my browser, slowing it down.
No use, a lot of work, so well, useless. If youre serious about creating in-browser-solutions, rather go with Java or Flash.

yes, an old-fashioned browser plugin wouldn't make much sense. it would be a lot of work to maintain, making it secure would be very hard, most people won't be eager to install it,...

but there are other solutions coming up like google's native client. it doesn't have the issues of a plugin.

i think being able to play games directly in the browser without the need for installing anything would be a huge advantage and open up a lot of business possibilities.

I wouldn't say no one uses a solution like this. Unity has a webplayer and it is becoming widely circulated. You only have to install the plugin once(same with java), after that, all the game content is streamed to your computer while you never leave the browser. It locally stores some of this content if you wish so you don't have to keep re-downloading the same game again. This works quite well, so I hope 3DGS does this one day.

The web player was trashed - at least it was removed from the forecast quite a while ago.

the only browser plugin that has a huge penetration is flash. unity is nowhere close. they have big hopes in native client too and already have shown a test version at some conference.

Native clients are great, but who wants to wait around until they materialize? I am using Unity since it's proven tech and I have an idea that no one else made, so I want to get it out to masses through a webplayer. I think if the game is good enough, people won't mind a simple little browser plugin. wink

Then they could also just download the game!
I wouldnt ever install a browser plugin just to see something someone made in Unity. If the creator doesnt even know what his customers want, I am sure the game is not worth installing a plugin either.

Have you looked at the "OSA Kit" system?
I suppose it's possable it may help you with your quest...

I have tried this system and it does work well and it's easy to combine a compiled 3dgs project so the project runs through your browser. It does have some advantages over simply downloading a zipped folder... etc...etc...
In any case... Have a look...

Maybe the creator wants the customers that really don't care if the screenshots are awesome laugh.
