It's dead. A8 would have been good when A6 was released. If you can't make the game you want with the current version then best to keep looking.
I do think it is the easiest engine too learn how to code with and even build levels, however it is just a hobby engine. Talent can make some interesting games.
Unity3d however has terrible 2d support (unless they have changed that in the last 2 years. When I wanted to make a 2d games that needed animation it was quite a pain. I invited a method but it was annoying.
