Even if I find the magic that works, I have no idea about hidden side effects happening inside Zorro.

In my experience, there are normally no hidden effects. The results of any modification of variables are visible at once. All global variables are in the "g" struct and thus available to lite-C - Zorro has no other internal variables.

So I think you can safely experiment for skipping the last cycle or achieving any special test or training methods. If you want, I can also check your solution to make sure that there are no hidden side effects.
