Beeing original with a game idea does not mean to
ignore "standarts" like the user-inputs / keysettings in
AAA Shooters.
People expect a game to be easy to handle, playing the game
not "working" the game.
So if someone makes a shooter-like game, dont! try to
invent the weel again and make some akward key-settings.
or you have it freely configururable.

High FPS are also more important than having
top noth GFX.
And dont bother the player with a flat story
if it is of a "John Parker, an ex police man freeing the world of the uber-evil guy XYZ".
If the story is not really key point to gameplay, dont try
to emphasize it too much, and just present a simple version
of it to the player.

And.. the fist 10 minutes of the game are key to the rest
of the game, as the beginning of a game is remembered longer
than some part in the middle.
The player should learn to controll the game in this period
and have some rewards to get him going.

not true.. screenshots sell games, and people can always upgrade.

you where talking about shooters?? those live only by top BLOODY gfx

why do you want more than 50/60 fps??? for what?

it has always to be a good mix of all ingredients (gameplay, ai, story, competition, quests,...) and if this has good gfx than its the better one

When a game comes out, it needs to run fast on the
current "average" machine of the target group.
The argumnt, that people can upgrade is wrong, since
this would mean, that the game runs smooth wehnever the "averag" machine has evolved to the required level.
By this time the game is outdated/past the sales period already.
I even think that a game developer should not run and test
the game on his mostly higher than average machine.
This is one of the reason seen here often in the forum,
why games run choppy.

I can't recommend what makes a good game as there are soo many different things to list.

If you want some creative ideas from yourself, this always works for me. Go out, buy a few games, order pizza, have a lot of coke, sit down and play the games. My best ideas have come from this excercise.

i think the most important thing to do is to develop a feeling and theme and 'heartbeat' to build the whole game around. then to figure out addictive mechanisms whcih you can dress up in this feeling and theme

i think atmosphere and gameplay are most important, so that you can enjoy the game
